Eastern Salisbury Column: Final preparations being made for 2012-2013 school year

Salisbury schools are soon to reopen for the 2012-13 school year, welcoming students, teachers and staff back for another exciting adventure.

Student orientations will be held for those entering kindergarten and first grade at Harry S Truman Elementary School and Western Salisbury Elementary School, sixth grade at Salisbury Middle School and ninth grade at Salsibury High School and new students Aug. 27 to welcome them and show them around the new, unfamiliar territory.

The district is providing regular bus transportation on orientation day for the students. Orientation times for elementary are 8:45 to 11:40 a.m. for morning kindergarten, 12:20 to 3:15 p.m. for afternoon kindergarten and 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. for first grade.

All students report to their respective school for the first day of classes Aug. 28. LCTI students will be transported to and from the high school at their scheduled time.

Just when school begins, Labor Day appears right around the corner and the students already get a holiday. There is no school for students Aug. 31 and Sept. 3 for the Labor Day holiday. School is back in session Sept. 4.

The summer office hours for the district 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ends Aug. 24 and regular office hours will resume Aug. 27. The high school office is open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

There will be a laptop orientation and distribution for new middle school and high school families entering into the school district 10 a.m. Aug. 23 at SHS. To attend, RSVP to Mary Bishop by emailing her at or calling 610 797-2062.

St. Thomas More School will reopen for all students in kindergarten through eighth grade Sept. 4.

The Swain School will have an all school orientation/registration and picnic 9:30 a.m. Sept. 4. School opens officially Sept. 5 for all students.

One way to easily keep up-to-date with township happenings is to attend the local municipal meetings held in the Municipal Building located at 2900 S. Pike Ave.

The Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners will meet 7 p.m. Aug 23.

The Salisbury Township Planning Commission will meet 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11.

The Zoning Hearing Board scheduled for Sept. 4 has been cancelled.

The municipal offices and building will be closed Sept. 3 for Labor Day.

Devonshire yard waste drop off site will be open Sept. 1 and 4. Franko Farm drop off will be open Aug. 25, 28 and Sept. 8. Both drop off sites will be open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Handicapped accessible garden plots are available at Franko Park. Contact Al Sulzer at 610-797-4000 to request more information or an application.

Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Eastern Salisbury will be having their Sunday School Rally Day 9 a.m. Sept. 9.

The Eastern Salisbury Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary is once again holding their breast cancer awareness fundraiser by selling T-shirts. All proceeds from the sale will be sent to Cancer Support Community - Greater Lehigh Valley to help support families of cancer patients. Orders are due by Sept. 15 for an Oct. 13 pick-up date. Make sure to visit to stay up to date with the requirements for voter identification. The election is approaching in November and Pennsylvania is requiring all voters to have a proper form of identification. The last day to register to vote is Oct. 9; be prepared to go to the polls.
