The Allentown Public Library, 1210 Hamilton St., is gearing up for autumn with numerous programs. These programs are open to the public and an Allentown Public Library Card is not required. Some events may require preregistration.
Computer classes are offered 9 to 11 a.m. every Saturday morning beginning Oct. 6. Sign-ups begin Sept. 15. Classes are on various topics such as setting up a personal email account, computer basics, web basics and job hunting. Space is limited so you need to call 610-820-2400, ext. 2 or visit the library to sign up.
A book group is held 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of every month except June and July. The book for Sept. 25 is "Petals from the Sky" by Mingmei Yip. Call Ximena Miranda at 610-820-2400, ext. 4 for more information. All are welcome. You do not need to attend every book discussion.
The library will be closed Sept. 29. Be sure to attend Allentown's Points of Pride Parade and Community Festival. The library will be marching in the parade to celebrate the library's 100th anniversary. The parade begins 11 a.m. The downtown festival is noon to 7 p.m.
The library will also be closed Oct. 20.
A knitting club is for those interested in learning how to knit or want to share their expertise with others. We are trying to form a knitting group at the library. As of now the group is scheduled to meet 3 to 4:30 p.m. on a Saturday but the date and time can change according to club members. The sign up sheet is available at the library, so call or visit the library.
During the month of September the library will be offering various programs on Pennsylvania Civil War 150. Scheduled for 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26 is a program, Pennsylvania Past Players. Three performers will dress up in period costumes and perform skits about the Civil War. No sign-up required.
