Art students recognized in peace poster competition

Two Salisbury Middle School art students were singled out for producing the best "peace poster" in an annual competition sponsored each year by the Alton Park Lions Club.

The first place poster in the "Imagine Peace" themed competition was done by Margaux Petruska.

Her poster portrays the world with a peace symbol imposed over the globe, and a two-fingered "peace" sign superimposed with flags from around the world. Another symbol of peace, a white dove is shown approaching our planet.

Second place winner was John Rodriquez. His colorful poster uses the planet as the body of a winged dove, with the globe circled by flags of different countries.

Joe Sizer, president of the Alton Park Lions Club gave each student who completed a poster a framed certificate of achievement, saying he "saw how hard it must have been" for art teacher Jackie Miller to choose the best two from a room full of creative ideas.

The judging and awards were one week later than in previous years because of missed art classes when schools were closed for Hurricane Sandy.

Sizer presented a $50 dollar bill to Petruska for her winning poster. Sizer said the winning SMS posters would be sent to progressively wider regional and state competition and then on to final national competition.
