former Mack Trucks employee

Michael W. Derewicz, 75, of Macungie, died in his home March 16, 2013. He was the husband of Dolores Derewicz. They were married for 53 years. Born in Jersey City, N.J., he worked as a technical writer for Mack Trucks for 29 years before accepting early retirement in 1987. He then worked at Wedgewood Golf Course as a member of the grounds crew for 25 years.

A sure-handed shortstop as a youth, he coached baseball for many years in Southern Lehigh, including with the 13 to 16-year-old senior division, American Legion, Connie Mack and Junior Legion, which he helped found in the late 1970s. In 1980, he was a coach with the Southern Lehigh Connie Mack State Champions.

What he loved most about baseball were the lessons the game teaches, how to learn and grow through failure and how to win with dignity and humility.

He is survived by his wife; son, Michael M. and his wife Anna Rose, of Breinigsville; son, Paul A. and his wife Leah, of Phoenix, Ariz., Jon R. and his wife Kristine, of Ardmore, and Mark W. and his wife Maia Ann of Chapel Hill, N.C.; grandchildren, Jack, Kate, Thomas, Peter, Rowan and Willem; brother, Gerald, of Port St. Lucie.

Contributions may be made to Lehigh Valley Hospice, 2166 S. 12th St., Allentown, 18103 or to the church, 18103.

Arrangements were made by the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown.
