Playing for real: Touchstone Theatre presents the eighth "Young Playwrights' Festival," a showcase of new plays written by area elementary and middle school students, May 18, Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center, Bethlehem. Immediately following is a gala reception in the Lehigh University Art Galleries. Participant schools this year include Dual Language Charter School, above; Donegan Elementary; Freemansburg Elementary; Lincoln Elementary, all Bethlehem, and Harrison-Morton Middle and Central Elementary, both Allentown. One play from each participant school is produced in the festival. Gala attendees meet the Touchstone Ensemble, enjoy drinks and desserts, view the exhibit, and support Touchstone and its "ArtsTouch" education programs through live and silent auction. Hot "Upstairs": The "Jazz Upstairs" series in the Rodale Community Room, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown, goes Parisian at 7:30 p.m. May 17 with Hot Bijouxx, above. The group includes vocalist Kristen Jasionowski, guitarist Ryan McNeely, accordionist Dallas Vietty and percussionist Kevin Ripley. Bijouxx, true to its name, plays what's known as "hot swing," or music from the 1920s and '30s. Blended in are tunes from the American Songbook, bossa nova rhythms and French gypsy waltzes.
