JERUSALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH OF EASTERN SALISBURY
On June 1, the Jerusalem Lutheran Church of Eastern Salisbury held an event to commemorate the veterans and military personnel within the community. This is the second time the church has held this event. Throughout the afternoon, visitors had the opportunity to hear the stories and learn about the service of local military members. The event provided a time for community members to enjoy food and fellowship and show their appreciation of what these veterans have sacrificed.
Marilyn Roth and Lt. Cmdr. Sandra Thomas, who organized the event, worked to create a display of veterans’ photos, personal items and memorabilia. These items included coins, flags, awards and uniforms, which were displayed throughout the room. A commemorative book was created in which each person’s military service was described and pictures of the veteran were included. Community members and veterans were able to take the books home at the end of the event.
A banner was signed by many to thank veterans for their dedication to protecting the country. The banner will be sent to a division within either the Navy or the Marines. Community members were also able to see a Humvee, which they were able to take photos in and ask the members of the 314 India Battery stationed in Allentown about. Veterans also led community members through the cemetery where they were able to pay their respects to military personnel who had died as far back as the Revolutionary War.
Overall, the veterans’ commemorative day at the Jerusalem Lutheran Church of Eastern Salisbury provided an excellent opportunity for community members to learn about local veterans and show their admiration of these military heroes.
