This spring when the new St. Luke’s Sacred Heart signs are installed outside the hospital, it will be an indication that exciting changes are underway at the century-old hospital campus in Allentown.
A year after joining St. Luke’s University Health Network, once-struggling Sacred Heart Hospital has undergone a $31-million upgrade that has revitalized numerous buildings’ patient floors, and strengthened and expanded health-care services.
The practice of W. Timothy Scharle MD Internal Medicine, affiliated with the St. Luke’s University Health Network and specializing in internal medicine and primary care, has added a new doctor and moved its office to a new location, Suite, 304, 306 S. New St., Bethlehem.
Paul Le, DO, joined Dr. Scharle in September 2018 and is seeing new and existing patients.
“Dr. Scharle is a well-respected physician who has been taking care of the people of our community for more than 30 years,” said Ken Dyer, Practice Administrator.
House sales declined for the third straight month, putting sales in negative territory for the first quarter of 2019 compared to house sales for the same three months one year ago.
Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors (GLVR) officials report that March data “showed a soft start to the spring selling season.”
Closed sales for houses in the Lehigh Valley decreased 7.2 percent in in March, with 589 houses sold, down from 635 houses sold in March 2018, according to the Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors (GLVR) monthly report released April 15.
Three of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals are St. Luke’s hospitals, said to be an unprecedented achievement.
St. Luke’s are the only hospitals in Lehigh Valley to achieve this honor.
St. Luke’s University Hospital - Bethlehem, Fountain Hill, has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals in the Major Teaching Hospital category by IBM Watson Health for the fifth year in a row and the seventh time.
The Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Dealers Association has donated $25,000 to St. Luke’s University Health Network.
Planned is a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and renovation of the inpatient pediatric unit by early 2020 at St. Luke’s University Hospital - Bethlehem.

The Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors (GLVR) reported that inclement weather in Februrary may have impacted sales of houses for the month.
The average sales price and median sales price increased again in February after decreases in January.
There was also a decline in new listings in February after an increase in new listings in January.
Closed sales for houses in the Lehigh Valley decreased for a second straight month, down 7.7 percent in February, with 418 houses sold, down from 453 houses sold in February 2018, according to the GLVR report released March 12.
The preview gala, “Main Streets of the Lehigh Valley,” for the 2019 Lehigh Valley Auto Show, will be held 6-10 p.m. March 20 at Stabler Arena, Lehigh University, Goodman Campus, Bethlehem. Proceeds benefit St. Luke’s University Health Network.

Also, an increase in new listings may reverse a trend.
Closed sales for houses in the Lehigh Valley decreased 5.7 percent in January, with 448 houses sold, down from 475 houses sold in January 2018. according to the GLVR.
A new inpatient pediatric unit has opened at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital on the fifth floor of the Jaindl Family Pavilion at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township.
The unit is part of a plan to bring services from more than 30 pediatric specialties under one roof at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital.
“When a child needs hospital care, it’s a difficult time for families,” Physician-in-Chief of Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital J. Nathan Hagstrom, MD, said.
