Second quarter housing sales up 16.7 percent, LVAR reports

The Lehigh Valley Association of Realtors (LVAR) has released a new report on housing market data today that confirms a strengthening housing market.

The initial quarterly report lists positive indicators showing second quarter 2012 home sales have increased 16.7 percent over second quarter sales the previous year.

Pending sales were up 25 percent forecasting the potential for increased sales in the coming months.

An additional sign that the housing market is on the road to recovery is the decrease in inventory of homes for sale, down 16.6 percent over last year.

It's 'Harvest Weekend' time on Lehigh Valley Wine Trail

The Lehigh Valley Wine Trail celebrates the grape harvest annual "Harvest Weekend," 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sept. 8 and noon - 5 p.m. Sept. 9 at eight wineries with tastings, vineyard and winery tours, food and wine pairings, and entertainment.

The wineries will promote the state's "Pennsylvania Preferred" program by partnering with producers of Pennsylvania specialties.

Open house

PBS39 hosts its second annual open house, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Sept. 8, at the Public Media and Education Center, 839 Sesame St., Bethlehem.

The event, free and open to the public, features live music by Blue Sour, moon bounces, storytelling by Kristin Pedemonti, studio tours, educational workshops and an Elmo scavenger hunt.

Doctor joins Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network has welcomed Ali Ahsen Shah, M.D., to the Good Shepherd Spine & Joint Center.

Dr. Shah is a physical medicine and rehabilitation medicine physician fellowship-trained in spine medicine, specializing in treating spine and joint pain without surgery.

He joins physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians Chirag Kalola, M.D., and Yasmeen Bhatti, M.D., at the Good Shepherd Spine & Joint Center, Good Shepherd Health & Technology Center, 850 S. Fifth St., Allentown.

Ethics forum

The Forum for Ethics in the Workplace will host an ethics breakfast with the topic, "What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets," 7 a.m. Sept. 13, University Center, DeSales University, Center Valley.

The event begins with an introduction by Harvard professor and author, Michael Sandel via PBS video. Featured guests to comment on this topic and Sandel's book are DeSales University faculty Joshua Schulz, Ph.D., and David Gilfoil, Ph.D.

LVIA grant to aid firefighters

The Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Fire Department has received $10,920 from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Heritage Grant program to purchase turnout gear for personnel at Lehigh Valley International Airport.

Turnout gear is the protective clothing including helmets, pants, jackets, hoods, gloves and boots worn by firefighters to keep them safe in extreme heat. A complete set costs approximately $2,200 and can be worn eight to nine years, according to Charles Everett, Executive Director of the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority.

Allentown Bridgeworks gets $500,000 grant for upgrades

Acting United States Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank announced a $500,000 Economic Development Administration grant to the Allentown Economic Development Corp. and the Allentown Commercial and Industrial Development Authority to upgrade Allentown's Bridgeworks Enterprise Center during an Aug. 21 visit to the city.

Blank and Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski toured the 62,000-square-foot former Mack Truck plant.

Musikfest 2012 braves storms; expected to break even

More than 900,000 people attended Musikfest 2012, according to ArtsQuest officials.

Musikfest, the United State's largest free music festival, took place Aug. 3 - 12, with 515 performances by 318 performers on 15 stages. This year's festival included free concerts on 14 of the 15 stages, the largest number of free stages in the event's 29-year history.

More than 48,000 people attended the 10 concerts at the Sands Steel Stage, Musikfest's only ticketed venue, where Boston, Daughtry, Jane's Addiction, Sheryl Crow, MGMT, Young the Giant and the Goo Goo Dolls performed.

Ben Franklin seeks high-tech projects

Innovation Works (IW), the Ben Franklin Technology Partner of Southwestern Pennsylvania, will award up to $800,000 in technology commercialization funding to universities, early-stage and-or established companies based in Pennsylvania.

Funding will be awarded for projects up to $100,000 each that address engineering design challenges, show a high degree of innovation, and identify a clear path to commercialization with the potential to impact digital and-or robotics-related companies in Pennsylvania.

Deadline for final proposal submissions is Sept. 7.
