"Lawless" is a brutal drama based on a true story said to have taken place during the Great Depression in 1931 in Franklin County, Va.
With the advent of Prohibition in 1920, following passage of the Volstead Act as the 18th Ammendment in 1919, the making and drinking of alcoholic beverages was banned in the United States.
For members of Fishtank Ensemble, the music world is their oyster.
The cover of Fishtank Ensemble's latest CD, "Woman in Sin," looks like a pop-up greeting card with the eclectic music group's images in front of, or perhaps in, an aquarium surrounded by denizens of the deep.
Fishtank Ensemble, which played Musikfest in 2011, plays at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 27, Mauch Chunk Opera House, Jim Thorpe.
SALISBURY TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Lindberg Park Master Plan envisions perimeter walking and bicycle path
Plans to upgrade Lindberg Park were greeted for the most part with enthusiasm during a public hearing, with concerns expressed by those attending about those who use the park taking shortcuts across adjacent homeowners' properties.
One of the chief features of the "Lindberg Park Master Plan and Neighborhood Connection" unveiled before approximately 25 residents Sept. 17 would be a walking, running and bicycle trail around the park's perimeter.
The update of the Salisbury Township Comprehensive Plan, more than two years in the making and some 15 years since the previous plan, will have to wait a little longer.
The resolution to adopt the plan was greeted by silence when it came up for a vote at the Sept. 13 Board of Commissioners meeting.
Not one of the commissioners moved to bring the resolution up for a vote.
"We have no motion to adopt it [the resolution] as it stands," Board of Commissioners' President James Brown said.
An automotive service business proposed for Lehigh Street in Salisbury Township has received approval from township Planning Commission.
Planners voted 4-0, with three members of the commission absent Sept. 11, to approve several aspects of the plan for Kost Tire and Auto Service, 3117 Lehigh St.
Approved was combining of the preliminary and final plan, a minor-lot subdivision of 8,931 square feet at 2200 31st Southwest owned by Marse Associates that is to be added to the 3117 Lehigh Street tract for a total a 34,308-square-foot parcel.
"Robot & Frank" is a cute comedy-drama that presents issues about growing old and health care for the elderly in a very entertaining way.
The film by movie producer turned first-time feature director, Jake Schreier, and TV writer-producer and first-time feature screenwriter, Christopher D. Ford, should garner an actor Oscar nomination for Frank Langella, previously nominated for his stunning portrayal of former President Richard Nixon in director Ron Howard's "Frost-Nixon" (2008).
A public hearing on the Lindberg Park Master Site Development Plan will be held 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the township Municipal Building.
Township residents are invited to attend the first public meeting of the Salisbury Township Lindberg Park Study Committee to discuss the development plan.
While termed a development plan, the purpose of it is to determine ways in which Lindberg Park can be improved.
According to Township Manager Randy Soriano, the township has received state funding through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for the study.
A vote to accept or reject adopting the Salisbury Township Comprehensive Plan is expected to be on the agenda of the township Board of Commissioners' first monthly meeting, 7 p.m. Sept. 13, Salisbury Township Municipal Building, 2900 South Pike Avenue.
The township Planning Commission has voted to recommend adoption of the plan by the BOC.
The envelope, please.
That's the plot device on which, ahem, rides "Premium Rush," one of late summer's most adrenaline-charged movies.
The title refers to the speed, priority or experience of a New York City bicycle-courier delivering a high-priority message.
Never mind the definition. This film is the fastest thing on reels. You'll grip the arm of your movie theater seat, the person next to you (best to know him or her first) or your reporter's notebook (as was my case).
July was a particular busy month for the Salisbury Township Police Department, based on a report issued at the recent Board of Commissioners' meeting and a recently-concluded murder investigation.
The new six-month police department report was issued by Salisbury Township Police Chief Allen W. Stiles.
"We brought our homicide case to a successful conclusion after a long investigation," Stiles said.
