Ben Franklin seeks high-tech projects

Innovation Works (IW), the Ben Franklin Technology Partner of Southwestern Pennsylvania, will award up to $800,000 in technology commercialization funding to universities, early-stage and-or established companies based in Pennsylvania.

Funding will be awarded for projects up to $100,000 each that address engineering design challenges, show a high degree of innovation, and identify a clear path to commercialization with the potential to impact digital and-or robotics-related companies in Pennsylvania.

Deadline for final proposal submissions is Sept. 7.

Dale D. "Chubby" Hoffman, 86, formerly of Alburtis, died August 10, 2012, in Mosser Nursing Home, Trexlertown. He was the husband of Elizabeth C. (Knerr) Hoffman, also a resident at Mosser Nursing Home. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on July 6. Born in Alburtis, he was a son of the late Spencer and Katie (Weidner) Hoffman.

He was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, Alburtis.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.

Joan M. Tunitis, 83, of Macungie, died August 18, 2012, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. She was the wife of J. Edmund Tunitis. Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Thomas M. and Catherine (Cavanaugh) McCormick.

She was a graduate of Immaculata College.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Emmaus.

She is survived by her husband; children, Joseph, Susan Liberi, Joan Brofft, Jeannette Berean, John and Thomas; sister, Sr. Theresa Marian, IHM; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Mary A. Rossillo, 91, of Salisbury Township, died August 12, 2012, at the home of her daughter Mary Rivera in Bethlehem. She was the wife of the late Rosario J. "The Boss" Rossillo in 1992. Born in Pulcherini, Latina, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Stefano and Giuseppa Rossillo Pannone.

She was a long time member of St. Paul's R.C. Church, Allentown.

Along with her husband she was co-owner of the former Rossillo Sportswear Company of Allentown and Coplay for over 15 years.

Summer Harmony to sing 'Allentown'

The Summer Harmony concert, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24, Parkland High School Auditorium, 2700 N. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Allentown, will feature The Allentown Band performing "We Love Allentown," written by Robert Pearce, a 90-year-old Emmaus resident and retired Allen Organ employee, and his daughter, Joanne, a pianist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Allentown Band member Tom Heinze rewrote the arrangement for band and men's chorus. The song, which was written 30 years ago in response to Billy Joel's "Allentown" song, is to be performed to commemorate Allentown's 250th anniversary.
