2013 - the Year of the Snake

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 by The Press in Columns

The New Year of 2013 has begun, which under the Chinese calendar, is the Year of the Snake.

A new year excites optimism and the grand possibilities of future endeavors. January ignites in us the feeling that we can become who we strive to be, travel to new places and live the life we've always wanted. In making resolutions for the new year, it is best to set small and specific goals on a weekly basis, if you want to see the results.

Elementary school students invite their families to lunch

It is officially winter and during the winter season it is important to keep healthy and well-fed. The outdoor wildlife sometimes can suffer during snowy months. Natural food supplies for the birds are usually scarce. When the snowfall comes, sparrows and juncos are forced to congregate at feeders as these species typically feed on bare ground. Keep feeders filled with a variety of quality seed, fresh water for drinking and bathing and cover, preferably provided by plants, to keep birds coming back to your backyard.

WESTERN SALISBURY COLUMN Praying for the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by DIANE ROBERTS Special to The Press in Columns

After Friday's tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, it is almost inconceivable to me to think of and write about anything happy. My heart breaks for the families of the victims of such a senseless act. I can not even fathom the loss of children, especially such an innocent group of kindergarten students.

Although I know our community mourns this loss and prays for the victims and their families, we still need to live our lives to the fullest and be kind to all.
