Opera depicts J.S. Bach as a 'real guy'

The family opera, "Young Meister Bach," a comical and educational tale about composer Johann Sebastian Bach's early years, has its world premiere, 3 p.m. March 1, Lehigh University's Zoellner Arts Center, 420 E. Packer Avenue, Bethlehem.

The music of Bach has a long history in the Lehigh Valley. The Bach Choir of Bethlehem, which is producing "Young Meister Bach," was established in 1898 and continues to be a beloved part of the Lehigh Valley music landscape.

It's not nearly as surprising as who will receive an Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, as who has not received a competitive Oscar.

The list, to name a few, includes Alfred Hitchcock, Cary Grant and Peter O'Toole.

That said, the year 2013 is memorable for brilliant directing, brave acting and superb productions. It was a year for the ascendancy of African-American directors and actors, as well as for fact-based stories.

The audience walks to their seats for the Act 1 DeSales University Theatre performance of "The Diary of Anne Frank," knowing the tragic final outcome that awaited Anne and her family. Yet still, the audience comes. For while the true life story of Anne Frank has an unhappy ending, in the end, it is Anne's spirit that triumphs.

Spotlight On: 'Music Hall' closing its doors

After 40 years, the Lehigh Valley's "British Music Hall" is closing its doors.

Chris Simmons, founder of "An Evening At A British Music Hall," says performances at 8 p.m. Feb. 28 and March 1, Godfrey Daniels 7 E. Fourth St., Bethlehem, will be the last.
