Voting machines demonstrated

The Lehigh County Elections & Voter Registration Office would like to invite the public to attend demonstrations of the next generation of voting machines. This is a three day event to be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11, 12 and 13 at the Lehigh County Government Center, Public Hearing Room, 17 S. 7th St., Allentown, with the following schedule:

•Election Systems & Software: 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 11

•Clear Ballot: 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 11

•Unisyn Voting Solutions: 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 12

Donut Derby Sept. 3

Lehigh Wheelmen are having its 2018 Donut Derby 9 a.m. Sept. 3, Labor Day, at Valley Preferred Cycling Center, Trexlertown.

The Donut Derby is a fun 36-mile race with a twist: get a 3-minute time credit for each doughnut eaten at stops positioned at mile markers 12 and 24.

Doughnut-adjusted time determines the winner in several age categories.

Lunch and an awards ceremony will follow the ride.

After the derby, children ages 10 and under are invited to ride the Munchkin Mile on the T-Town Velodrome.

There is a fee to ride.

Rehearsals begin Aug. 27

emmaus chorale

The Emmaus Chorale resumes its rehearsal schedule 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St., Emmaus.

New members are welcome to join at this time. The Chorale meets weekly on Mondays.

This 45-member community choir, based in Emmaus, is open to participants throughout the Lehigh Valley and has a 35-year history of performing free biannual concerts of sacred, secular and contemporary music.

The Wheels of Time Friday night cruise will be held Aug. 24.

Cars will leave Allen Organ on Route 100 6:30 p.m., turn left on Buckeye Road, turn left on Route 29 (Chestnut Street), go through Emmaus and turn left on Harrison Street, pass Emmaus High School and turn right on Cedar Crest Boulevard, turn left on Lower Macungie Road, turn left on Willow Lane and back to Route 100 and turn left back to the Macungie Memorial Park. Thanks to volunteers who offered to provide traffic control through Emmaus.

Frogs & Friends program open

Frogs and “Friends” live animal meet-and-greets runs through Sept. 3 at the Da Vinci Science Center, 3145 Hamilton Blvd., Allentown.

Professional animal handlers from Little Ray’s Reptiles will introduce guests to local and international animals on a daily basis. There are live shows 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. every Saturday and 1 and 3 p.m. every Sunday. An exhibit features up-close photography which captures the beauty of the natural world.

Eligible veterans who served on active duty in the Persian Gulf Theater of Operations from Aug. 2, 1990 to Aug. 31, 1991 are eligible to collect a special one-time payment to honor their service and sacrifice.

Applications for the Persian Gulf Conflict Veterans Bonus are due by Aug. 31.

The bonus program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, pays $75 per month for qualifying, active-duty service members, up to a $525 maximum.

Themed contests deadline Sept. 7

The Celtic Classic will hold several Celtic themed contests during the annual festival Sept. 28 through 30 at the event grounds, bordered by Main, Lehigh, Spring and Conestoga streets, Bethlehem.

There will be a Celtic fiddling styles challenge 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Charles A. Brown Ice House.

There will be a poetry competition with three entry levels, third through sixth grades, seventh through 12th grades and adult. Submissions must be original works by the person entering the contest.

The city of Allentown’s 2018 Summer Concert Series and Saturday in the Park series have rescheduled three dates so far this season due to inclement weather.

Municipal Band will perform 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at West Park;

Crazy Hearts “Saturday in the Park” series will perform 7 p.m. Sept. 8; and

Municipal Band will perform 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at West Park.

The city of Allentown’s “Saturday in the Park” series features a wide variety of music genre’s including latin/salsa, country, jazz/swing/folk/r&b/soul, pop/psychedelic rock and funk/dance/party music.
