STOCKINGS FOR SOLDIERS

The Lehigh Valley Press invites readers to share some of the warmth of the yuletide season with Keystone Military Families and their Stocking for Soldiers program.

Keystone Military Families’ mission is to provide caring support for deployed military members in all branches of service to our country; no matter where they are stationed in the world. “Our troops give us the freedom to be safe in our homes,” Keystone Military Families said.

Bethlehem event set for Oct. 14

CROP WALK

The 2018 CROP Hunger Walk will be held 1 p.m. Oct. 14, three and six mile pet-friendly walks starting 1:30 p.m., all beginning under the Hill-to-Hill bridge at the foot of Main Street, Bethlehem. Rest stops are provided.

Twenty-five percent of the funds raised by the walks are returned to the community. The remaining 75 percent is used by Church World Service local, national and international disaster relief and to help end hunger locally and around the world.

Nationwide test Oct. 3

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alert Oct. 3. The WEA portion of the test commences 2:18 p.m. EDT and the EAS portion follows 2:20 p.m. EDT. The test will assess the operational readiness of the infrastructure for distribution of a national message and determine whether technological improvements are needed.

Career fair planned Oct. 4

The East Penn School District and the Emmaus High School guidance department will host the inaugural 2018 Career Exploration Fair Oct. 4.

The event is open to all Lehigh Valley fifth to 12th grade students and focuses on degree and non-degree professions.

Students will have an opportunity to speak with over 50 career professionals who will share what path they took, the education required and what a typical day looks like within their fields.

The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley is receiving nominations for the 16th annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards. The winners will be recognized for their contributions to the community based on service hours and commitment.

The President’s Volunteer Service Awards will be given to the winners at an event 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 at DeSales University, 2755 Station Ave., Center Valley.

Coat drive through Oct. 21

The Quakertown Farmers Market, 201 Station Road, Quakertown, is holding its 23rd annual winter coat drive now through Oct. 21.

Gently used coats which are clean and still in good repair can be brought to the office located at Exit #4.

All collected coats will be given to the Salvation Army to help needy neighbors stay warm this winter.

Dance classes offered

YMCA

The YMCA offers a variety of recital classes for children of all ages. Classes range from Mommy & Me to Princess Ballet to various levels of Hip Hop & Acro, all culminating with an end of the year recital in June.

The eight month dance program is for boys and girls, and no one is turned away due to inability to pay. Financial assistance is offered to qualified applicants. YMCA dance is offered at six locations in the Lehigh Valley.
