Senior Alan Mendez unveils graduation project 'Valedictory' at high school concert

Graduation projects come in many sizes and shapes– some students job shadow a professional and some perform community service.

For senior Alan Mendez, his graduation project took on a new twist.

He chose to compose and conduct a performance of music written to celebrate graduation.

Q: What grade are you in?

A: I am in 12th grade at Salisbury High School.

Q: What is your favorite subject? Why?

A: My favorite subject is anatomy and physiology because I find the complexity of the human body is astounding and interesting.

Q: Have you received any special awards or recognition?

A: I have been in National Honor Society since 11th grade and I am secretary/treasurer of concert band.

Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?

A: I am involved in soccer, marching band, concert band and jazz band.

There's a child, 13 or so, who's lying on his bed,

And he wonders of all he wants to do and see.

But the voices, tender tyrants, crowd his sleepy head

As they whisper to him what he should want to be.

And the voices grow louder as the child grows older,

As the years mold him into a man.

He's forgotten his dreams and his young aspirations,

And now he only ever wonders if he can.

But O! to be filled with awe,

To want to live an adventure to tell.

To promise although your mind is raw,

I will not merely survive.

SALISBURY HAPPENINGS Band piece salutes late Superintendent Robert Gross

The Salisbury High School spring concert was held May 14. Performances included the a cappella group "Descant Get Enough," the block and club choruses, the Jazz Band and the Concert Band.

Many attendees enjoyed "Aquatica," a band piece commissioned by Dr. Scott Watson of Parkland High School given to the Salisbury Concert Band, in honor of the late Salisbury Superintendent Robert R. Gross III.

The night concluded with the premiere of "Valedictory," a piece arranged and directed by senior Alan Mendez celebrating graduating and moving on with life.
